Rayonier strives for exemplary results and continuous improvement in everything we do, including environmental performance. We are committed to protecting human health and the environment, and we promote the health and safety of our employees and the public in the communities in which we operate.
We establish and maintain health, safety, and environmental protection programs in compliance with our policies, and applicable laws and regulations. In some cases, we adopt internal standards where laws or regulations are not adequately protective or may not exist.
To safeguard our employees and the public, and to protect the environment, we have programs to:
- Identify and control actual or potential health, safety or environmental hazards associated with existing or planned operations and products.
- Comply with applicable law and Rayonier policy.
- Work constructively with trade associations, government agencies and others to develop realistic health, safety and environmental laws, regulations and standards based on sound science.
- Meet or exceed all state forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs) designed to protect water quality, soil productivity and wildlife habitat.
In our mills, we continue to make substantial investments to conserve energy and water, minimize and safely dispose of process byproducts, and comply with stringent air and water quality standards.
In 2007, the Fernandina Mill designed and installed a $30 million boiler that virtually eliminates the use of fossil fuels by burning environmentally-friendly biomass fuels, including the mill's own wood waste byproducts. This project saves approximately 200,000 barrels of oil per year and reduces air emissions by almost 70 percent.
Our U.S. timberlands and wood procurement practices are certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program and we plant about 50 million trees each year.
We regularly monitor our progress by conducting audits at our facilities and forest operations.
